Born in Oct 1919, to a middle class agricultural family in village Thatta, in Chabhal district Amritsar . Passed his intermediate from Khalsa College , Amritsar . Was commissioned in the Indian Army in June 1942. Saw active service during World War II. Also took part in the Indo-China war in 1962 and the Indo-Pak war in 1965 and 71. Held various staff appointments in his military carrer. General Narinder was awarded the Presidents Medal for meritorious service in the Indian Army.

After retirement from the army in 1974, he has been actively involved in social welfare, namely Human Rights and Education. He has been a crusader for the legitimate rights Punjab , for example for water disputes and basic Sikh rights.

For his condemnation of Blue Star, General Narinder remained in jail for over two years under TADA.

General Narinder is a member of the Human Rights Organization and the Committee on Disappearance of Youth in Punjab, which investigated the cases of all those cremated as “unclaimed” by Punjab Police in Amritsar district during the militancy period. He was actively involved in the investigation of these cases and the publication of the report “Reduced to Ashes” vol I. He also took active part in the rehabilitation of victims of the 1984 Delhi riots and Sikh soldiers who left their barracks in protest against Blue Star and were imprisoned or discharged.

On the education side, General Narinder is a founding member of Sikh Education Society based in Chandigarh . This society runs four institutions in Chandigarh and two in Punjab . He served as local secretary for five years and now is a member of the executive committee. Since 1980, he has been a member of the government body of Bir Baba Budha College near Chabhal in district Amritsar . He is also a member of the Institute of Sikh Studies Chandigarh . He is a trustee of Guru Asra Trust, which looks after Sikh orphans of militants and others killed by the Punjab Police.
